Black Widow Spider Bite

Black Widow spider bite Overview

Bites by black, brown and red widow (Latrodectus species), brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) and black house (Ixeuticus species) spiders cause acute, painful swelling in horses and can possibly cause necrosis of the skin and sloughing.

Although widow spider bites are not well documented in horses, horses are potentially at risk from the effects of the toxic bite of a female black widow spider. Widow spiders are commonly found in barns, wood and brush piles, and underneath water troughs in North America.
