Pythium insidiosum is a fungus-like organism found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. In the United States, P. insidiosum is found in the Southeast, Southwest and temperate Northern regions. It is most frequently found in stagnant water and freshwater lakes and ponds. Infection with P. insidiosum causes Pythiosis in horses as well as other animals and humans.
