Streptococcus equi is a Gram-positive bacterium of the Streptococcaceae family that is responsible for causing Strangles in horses. It is spread through direct contact or contaminated fomites.

Disinfectants
S. equi can be inactivated using 1% bleach, iodine-based, phenolics, quaternary ammonium or 70% ethanol. It can only survive for a few days while exposed to sunlight.
