Trichophyton equinum is a type of zoophilic fungi known as dermatophyte, which have the ability to utilise keratin as a nutrient source, i.e. they have a unique enzymatic capacity [keratinase]. It is responsible for causing dermatophytosis (ringworm) in horses, and rarely in humans. It is most often found in the saddle area of infected horses.

T. equinum is found worldwide except for the autotrophicum strain which is restricted to Australia and New Zealand.

Disinfection
T. equinum can be disinfected using diluted (1:10) bleach solution.
