Trichophyton soudanense is a type of fungi known as dermatophyte, which have the ability to utilise keratin as a nutrient source, i.e. they have a unique enzymatic capacity [keratinase]. It is responsible for causing dermatophytosis (ringworm) in horses. It is most often found in the flank and girth area of the horse.

T. soudanense is found mainly in Africa, however there have been imported cases reported from Europe, Brazil, Australia and USA.
