Trypanosoma evansi is a spindle-shaped protozoal parasite that is known for causing trypanosomal disease in horses, specifically manifesting as the disease known as Surra. Surra is a problem for horses living in South America, northern Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

T. evansi is transmitted to horses through biting flies (Tabanus and Stomoxys species), and less frequently through vampire bats. T. evansi is most frequently diagnosed in horses, however it has also been isolated from camels, buffalo, domestic pets (dogs, cats), other farm animals (cattle, llamas, pigs, goats, sheep), and elephants.
