West nile fever virus (WNFV) is a type of arbovirus, with a worldwide distribution, caused by a Flavivirus of the Flaviviridae family. The virus is primarily transmitted between birds and mosquitoes, however can also be transmitted from mosquitoes to horses and humans and other animals. WNFV is related to Japanese encephalitis virus and St. Louis encephalitis virus.

WNFV is inactivated by common disinfectants, including peroxygen-based and 2% glutaraldehyde.
