Papaver spp, also known as poppies, are a genus of close to 100 species of herbaceous flowering plants of the Papaveraceae family. Papaver spp contain isoquinoline alkaloids, which are toxic to humans and domestic animals including horses.

Two horses in New Zealand were poisoned by ingestion of iceland poppy (Papaver nudicaule) which was growing in their bare paddock. Papaver rhoeas has cause numerous cases of poisoning in humans.
