Thuja occidentalis, also known as white cedar or arborvitae is an evergreen coniferous tree from the cypress family. It is native to eastern North America and commonly sold as an ornamental for landscaping. The essential oils from this plant contain ketones and terpenes which are toxic to horses if ingested. Thuja occidentalis is one of the plants responsible for cases of poisoning in horses in Europe.
