Anoka Equine Veterinary Services


Established in 1978, Anoka Equine has been providing progressive, quality veterinary medicine for horse owners in the Twin Cities for over 30 years. Our clinic, located in Elk River, Minnesota, offers clients and referring veterinarians extensive preventative and emergency equine health services both in the field and in the hospital. We strive to provide compassion, education and service to our clients.while delivering exceptional care to our equine patients.
David Schwinghamer , DVM
Dr. David Schwinghamer is a Minnesota native from the southeast Twin Cities region. He began his veterinary studies in 2000 at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, and completed his final year at Texas A&M University School of Veterinary Medicine. He began practicing in an ambulatory practice outside of North Branch, MN in 2004. After two years he joined a private practice in San Antonio, TX with emphasis on surgery, emergency, and referral type medicine. Dr. Dave returned to Minnesota and joined Anoka Equine in the spring of 2008. Dr. Dave and his wife have two children. They enjoy traveling to horse shows together and spending time outdoors.
J.C. Thieke , DVM
Dr. J.C. Thieke graduated from the University of Minnesota Veterinary School in 1996. He completed an equine internship in Colorado at Littleton Large Animal Clinic, and then practiced in an equine clinic in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for two years before joining Anoka Equine in 1999. His professional interests include sports medicine including lameness, surgery, dentistry and chiropractics. Dr. Thieke also serves on the American Association of Equine Practitioners Dental Committee. He and his wife Tara (a small animal veterinarian) have four children: Grace, Colter, Hayden, and Bennett. They enjoy outdoor activities including camping, hunting and western performance horses.
Kevin Voller , DVM
Dr. Kevin Voller graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1988. He and Dr. Kim Voller met while in veterinary school and were married in 1987. Following graduation he worked in ambulatory equine practice for 1 year before returning to the University of Minnesota for a large animal surgical residency. He joined Anoka Equine in 1991. His interests are his three children, Brenna, Clayton, and Cole, hunting, fishing, horses, and anything outdoors.
Marta Davis-Tetrault Powers , DVM
Dr. Marta Davis-Tetrault Powers completed her veterinary education 20 minutes from home at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. Following graduation, she completed an internship at The Equine Clinic at OakenCroft in upstate New York. Dr. Marta has a strong interest in medicine, reproduction, radiology, lameness, anesthesia, and neonatal care. Additionally, Dr. Marta enjoys volunteering for both equine and small animal areas of need. Dr. Marta’s husband, Chris, is a large animal veterinarian. They have two cats, Vega and Nova, and one dog, Odin. Dr. Marta enjoys traveling, bird watching, cooking, time outdoors, and spending time with family and friends.
Monica Snyder , DVM
Dr. Monica Snyder is a Minnesota native, originally from a small town south of the Twin Cities. During college, she gained valuable experience in varied areas of the equine field, from hunter/jumper barns to thoroughbred race tracks (Canterbury Park in MN and Oaklawn Park in AR) to a world-renowned breeding operation in eastern PA. In addition, Monica spent many summers, school breaks and spare weekends working with the doctors and staff at Anoka Equine. After graduating from the University of Minnesota's College of Vet Med in 2013, she spent the next several years as an equine ambulatory vet in western PA. When the opportunity arose, Monica jumped at the chance to move back to MN and join Anoka Equine in early 2017. In her free time, Monica enjoys spending time with family, curling up with coffee and a good book, and (mildly) obsessively keeping track of Thoroughbred racing and breeding. She has two rescue dogs, Carl and Scoobie, and a Thoroughbred off the track named Ozzie.
Rick Marion , DVM
Dr. Rick Marion was born and raised in Manhattan, Kansas, and attended Kansas State University for seven years to get his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a Master’s degree in pathology. After veterinary school, Dr. Rick spent three years in private mixed practice. He returned to his academic pursuits in 1985 at the University of Minnesota, completing a three-year residency in Large Animal Surgery, and two additional years as an assistant professor working in the Large Animal Clinic. Dr. Rick then spent six years at the University of Missouri as a food animal clinician and equine ambulatory clinician. After finding moss growing on the bottom of his sneakers, Dr. Rick moved on to a private large animal practice in Stearns County, MN, and worked there for four years. The opportunity to move down the interstate to Anoka Equine arose in 2002, and he’s been here ever since. Outside work, Rick enjoys daily tirades against government spending, taxation, and intrusion into the lives of its citizens.
Zach Loppnow , DVM
Dr. Zach Loppnow was born and raised on a small swine farm in southeastern Minnesota. After finding his way into the veterinary school at the University of Minnesota, Zach divided his time between coursework and serving as the Vice-President of the National Veterinary Business Management Association. He is very excited to continue to develop his skills as a veterinarian while meeting the great client community that makes up Anoka Equine. In his free time, Zach enjoys working with his family's show pig business, raising and showing hogs across the country, or getting a chance to get outdoors, regardless of the weather. He is also an avid sports fan and enjoys any good book recommendations.
