Rainbow Equine Hospital


Rainbow Equine Hospital is a private equine RCVS accredited hospital located in Northern England. The hospital was first established in Malton in 1986. They provide full-service veterinary care and available 24/7 for emergencies. The hospital has state of the art surgical facilities and an inhouse diagnostic laboratory.
Aimi Duff , BVM&S CertAVP (EM) MRCVS
Aimi’s interest in horses started at an early age as a horse mad little girl gripped by Horse & Pony Magazine and loaning all sorts of ponies. Growing up as the daughter of two vets Aimi followed in the footsteps of her parents, graduating from Edinburgh in 2009. Upon graduation Aimi worked in mixed practice in Northumberland before concentrating on equine work. Aimi is interested in all aspects of equine practice and working with a variety of patients, from donkeys to performance horses. In 2016 Aimi gained her Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Equine Medicine).
Barny Fraser , BVSc MSc CertES(Orth) DipECVS
Barny joined Rainbow this summer returning to the UK after 7 years in the Southern Hemisphere, working initially in private practice in New Zealand and then as a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland, Australia. Prior to heading down-under he worked in Newbury and completed a surgical residency at the University of Edinburgh. He has been a European Specialist in equine surgery since 2006 and has a broad range of experience in racing, breeding, pleasure and competition horse referral practice. He is also widely published on a range of surgery-related topics.
Brian Reed , BVMS CertEP MRCVS (Director)
Brian grew up in the Scottish Borders and hails from a family with a strong veterinary background, being a 4th generation vet! After graduating from Glasgow Veterinary School in 2003, Brian worked for 5 years in a large mixed practice on Teesside doing farm and equine work. It was here he developed an interest in equine work. He moved to Rainbow in 2008 to further develop his interests in equine reproduction, lameness investigation and pre-purchase examinations. Brian gained the RCVS Certificate in Equine Practice in 2010, and became a Director of Rainbow Equine Hospital in 2015. Away from work Brian is a keen trail runner and keep fit enthusiast. He also enjoys working his Labrador, Noosa.
David Rendle , BVSc MVM CertEM(IntMed) DipECE
David initially worked in farm animal and equine practice in Somerset before completing an internship at Liphook Equine Hospital and a residency at The University of Glasgow. After more time in equine practice he focused on internal medicine obtaining a European diploma. He has subsequently worked at The Royal Veterinary College, Charles Sturt University in Australia and most recently at Liphook Equine Hospital. He moved to Rainbow in 2015 to further develop their internal medicine, critical care and laboratory facilities. He has particular interests in endocrine, gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases as well as ophthalmology and clinical pathology.
Ellie Child , BVSc MRCVS
Ellie joined the practice in August 2016. Originally from Knaresborough, Ellie graduated from the University of Bristol in July 2013. She then worked in a busy varied equine practice in Nottinghamshire for 2 years. She then undertook a 13 month rotating internship at the University of Liverpool Equine Hospital. Ellie is working towards her certificate in advanced veterinary practice – internal medicine, and has a keen interest in ophthalmology, laminitis and foal care. Outside of work, Ellie enjoys walking her lively Labrador, Flynn, skiing and travelling.
Ieuan Pritchard , BVSc MRCVS (Director)
Ieu comes from a large farming and show jumping family in Anglesey. He graduated from Liverpool in 1979 and after working in Cheshire and Wiltshire he joined Bob Ordidge as a founder member of Rainbow Equine Clinic in 1988. His family life revolves around horses with many of his family competing Nationally and Internationally. Ieu’s main interests lie with vettings, lameness and keeping sports horses performing at their best. He is an FEl Veterinary Delegate and a consultant for the NFU equine insurance. Ieu is proud to have seen Rainbow Equine Hospital develop to the centre of excellence that it is become and is most proud that it remains a friendly, caring environment.
Joe Mackinder , BVSc CertEP CertAVP MRCVS
Joe grew up in Slingsby and saw practice at Rainbow as a student before qualifying from Liverpool University in 2005. After 2 years mixed practice, Joe spent 8 years in purely equine practice both in the Dales and as clinical lead at The University of Bristol as well as spending a stud season in Australia. He returned home to Malton, and Rainbow in November 2014. Joe has a wide range of interests but is particularly keen on equine dentistry and is currently working toward becoming accredited as an equine dentist. Joe is married to a small animal vet and has 2 daughters, 2 dogs and a cat. He enjoys walking, swimming, and keeping a toddler entertained.
Jonathan Anderson , BVM&S, DACVS, MRCVS
Jonathan Anderson graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2000. He worked at Rainbow and the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital in Southern California before completing a large animal clinical fellowship at Oregon State Veterinary Teaching Hospital and an equine surgical residency at The University of California, Davis. He remained as a staff clinician at UC Davis before returning to Rainbow in September 2009 to further develop surgery and diagnostic imaging at the hospital. He has particular interests in arthroscopic and laparoscopic surgery, CT and cervical disease including the stabilisation of CVM cases.
Jonathon Dixon , BVetMed MVetMed DipECVDI MRCVS
Jonathon qualified from the Royal Veterinary College and following a short period working in Egypt for a charity veterinary practice joined Rainbow Equine Hospital as an intern for 18 months where he developed an interest in advanced imaging, in particular CT and MRI. Jonathon then completed a 3-year senior clinical training scholarship (residency) at the Royal Veterinary College in Large Animal Diagnostic Imaging before returning to Rainbow. In January 2017 he became a European Specialist in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. Only a handful of private equine hospitals in the UK have a specialist radiologist on site to be able to perform and interpret MRI, CT and scintigraphy. Jonathon oversees these cases and assists with radiography and ultrasonography to ensure that all horses coming to the hospital benefit from state-of-the-art diagnostics. He has particular interests in CT imaging of the head and neck, and MRI of the distal limb.
Kate Loomes , BVSc(hons) MSc CertAVP(EP) Cer
Kate graduated from the University of Sydney in 2005 and returned home to Yorkshire working in mixed and equine practice before completing an internship and residency in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia at the University of Liverpool. Kate became a European Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia in 2016 and has particular interests in the peri-operative care of colic patients and multi-modal pain management techniques. Kate joined the team at Rainbow in 2017 and is actively involved in the care of horses undergoing general anaesthesia or standing sedation for surgical and diagnostic imaging procedures. Kate also assists with the intensive care of hospitalised horses and foals.
Mandy Platt , BVSc MRCVS CertAVP(EM) MRCVS
Mandy Platt BVSc MRCVS CertAVP(EM) MRCVS joined the practice in February 2011. After graduating from Massey University, she worked for 2 years in stud and racing equine practice in New Zealand. Her interests include internal medicine and foal work along with routine health care. Mandy enjoys spending her free time travelling and exploring the North Yorkshire countryside with her Labrador, Ella. She is currently studying for her certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice – Equine Internal Medicine.
Moses Brennan , BVSc CertES(Orth) MRCVS
Moses Brennan qualified from the University of Liverpool in 1999 and worked in mixed practice before working at Ashbrook Equine Hospital in Cheshire where he developed an interest in equine surgery. Moses travelled and worked in New Zealand before undertaking a residency in equine surgery at the University of Sydney, Australia. Moses has been a surgeon at the practice since 2008 and is involved in all areas of surgery. His interests are in standing surgery and minimally invasive surgery and particularly advanced equine dentistry and oral surgery. His day-to-day caseload is dominated by head CT scans and performing minimally invasive tooth extractions and sinus surgeries.
Natalie Hind , BSc(Hons) BVMS MRCVS
Natalie is originally from Perthshire and after spending over ten years working in the sport horse and racing industry, returned to study in Scotland. Natalie was a very keen show jumper which saw her based in the U.K, America and Canada. She graduated from Glasgow Veterinary School in 2015
